“Crypto exchange with no fees” is one of the most searched phrases among Swedish crypto buyers — and one of the most misleading. Short answer: no, there is no exchange where you trade for free. There are only exchanges that show their costs openly and exchanges that hide them. In this guide we show where the costs actually sit, how to calculate what a “fee-free” purchase really costs — and the cheapest serious option in Sweden in 2026.

The short answer

An exchange is a business with server costs, licences, staff and profit targets. The money has to come from somewhere. When a platform advertises “0% fees”, in practice it always means one of three things:

  • Spread — the cost is baked into the price you get (most common).
  • Restrictions — zero applies only to certain pairs, amounts or a promo period.
  • Subscription — you pay a monthly fee instead (and the spread often remains anyway).

Spread — the hidden fee

Spread is the difference between the market price and the price you get. If Bitcoin trades at €100,000 and the app sells to you at €101,200, you just paid 1.2% — with no “fee” showing on the receipt. In simple buy interfaces, spreads of 0.5–2% are industry standard.

That is why an exchange charging a visible 0.25% can be four times cheaper than a “fee-free” app with a 1% spread. The visible fee is not the enemy — the hidden one is.

Rule of thumb: the louder a platform shouts about zero fees, the more carefully you should compare the price you are offered against the market price at that exact second.

How to calculate the real cost

The test takes 30 seconds:

  • 1. Open the app’s buy screen and note the price you are offered for, say, Bitcoin.
  • 2. Check the market price at the same moment on a price site or the exchange’s own pro view.
  • 3. Real cost = (your price − market price) / market price + visible fee.

Run that on a couple of popular “free” apps and you will quickly see why we would rather pay 0.25% openly than 0% with a hidden spread.

Every cost in crypto trading

Cost Where it hides How to minimise it
Trading fee Visible (maker/taker) Use the pro interface
Spread In the price you get Trade the order book, not “instant buy”
Deposits Cards cost most, SEPA least SEPA in EUR — free at some exchanges
SEK→EUR conversion Your bank’s markup Convert in an app with good rates first
Withdrawals Network fee + possible exchange markup Pick the right network, compare withdrawal fees

The cheapest serious option in 2026

The combination that gives Swedish users the lowest total cost in our experience: a MiCA-licensed exchange with low maker/taker pricing and free SEPA deposits — used consistently through the pro interface instead of the quick-buy screen.

That points to Kraken Pro: a visible 0.25%/0.40%, free SEPA deposits in EUR, order-book trading without consumer-app spread, and a MiCA licence via the Central Bank of Ireland. The full walkthrough is in our Kraken review, and the head-to-head with its biggest rival in Kraken vs Coinbase.

And keep the bigger picture: after Binance’s EU lockout, the licence is non-negotiable — a cheap exchange without MiCA authorisation is not cheap, it is a risk. Read more in our guide to Binance alternatives in Sweden.

Frequently asked questions

Is there any crypto exchange with truly zero fees?

No. Platforms advertising “0%” charge via spread, limited promos or subscriptions. The question is never whether you pay — only where.

Which is cheaper — a low fee or zero fee with spread?

Almost always the low visible fee. 0.25% in a pro interface beats a 1–2% hidden spread by a wide margin, especially on larger amounts.

How do I see the size of the spread?

Compare the price offered in the buy screen with the market price at the same second (price site or the exchange’s order book). The percentage difference is your spread.

Are fee-removing subscriptions worth it?

Only at high trading frequency in the simple app — and always check whether the spread remains. For most people a pro interface with no subscription is cheaper.

Which exchange has the lowest fees in Sweden in 2026?

Among MiCA-licensed exchanges, Kraken Pro (0.25%/0.40%) is one of the lowest open prices, with free SEPA deposits. See our full review for details.
