Kraken or Coinbase — which exchange should you pick in 2026? Both are major players, both are MiCA-licensed in the EU, and both work perfectly well from Sweden. But they differ sharply on the one thing that affects you every single trade: fees. We have used both, and here are the differences that actually matter.

Regulation and security
In practice this one is a draw — and that is good news. Both exchanges hold MiCA licences: Kraken via the Central Bank of Ireland, Coinbase via Luxembourg’s financial regulator CSSF. Both are valid across the entire EU, including Sweden. That means segregated customer funds, European supervision and a legal counterparty inside the EU.
Security track record leans slightly in Kraken’s favour: since 2011 the exchange has never suffered a major breach with customer funds lost. Coinbase also has a strong history as a publicly listed US company (NASDAQ: COIN) with regular external audits.

This is where the choice is decided for most people.
In the pro interfaces (Kraken Pro vs Coinbase Advanced), Kraken is clearly cheaper: 0.25%/0.40% versus Coinbase’s 0.40%/0.60%. On a 1,000 EUR purchase you pay roughly 2.5–4 EUR at Kraken and 4–6 EUR at Coinbase. Trade regularly and the gap compounds fast.
In the simple apps, both are expensive — but Coinbase is the most expensive. On top of the fee, Coinbase bakes a spread of typically 0.5–2% into the price you see, and card purchases can cost up to 3.99%. Coinbase also sells a monthly subscription (Coinbase One) that removes some fees — but the spread remains, so do the maths before paying for it.
The conclusion is the same as in our Kraken review: always use the pro interface, whichever exchange you choose. It is the same account and takes ten minutes to learn.

Coinbase wins here. The app is polished, onboarding is the smoothest in the industry, and everything is built so a complete beginner cannot go wrong. Kraken has caught up considerably in recent years, but Coinbase still feels a notch simpler in your first week.
The question is what that simplicity is worth. The difference in user experience matters most in your first days — the difference in fees matters every time you trade, forever.
Coin selection
Kraken lists more than 600 cryptocurrencies; Coinbase around 250–300 in Europe. For most people this is irrelevant — both carry Bitcoin, Ethereum and every major altcoin. If you hunt smaller tokens, Kraken is more likely to have them.
Verdict: which one should you choose?
- Choose Kraken if: you care about fees (most people should), want the widest selection, and value an unbroken security record since 2011.
- Choose Coinbase if: you prioritise the absolutely easiest app experience and accept paying more per trade for it.

Frequently asked questions
Which is cheaper — Kraken or Coinbase?
Kraken. In the pro interfaces Kraken charges 0.25%/0.40% versus Coinbase’s 0.40%/0.60%, and Kraken’s SEPA deposits are free. In the simple apps both are expensive, Coinbase most of all.
Are both legal in Sweden?
Yes. Both hold MiCA licences valid across the EU — Kraken via the Central Bank of Ireland, Coinbase via the CSSF in Luxembourg.
Can I deposit Swedish kronor on either?
No, neither exchange supports SEK. You deposit euros via SEPA (free at Kraken, about €0.15 at Coinbase) or pay by card — cards are the most expensive route.
Which is best for beginners?
Coinbase has the simplest app, but higher fees. In our experience even beginners learn Kraken Pro in an evening and save money on every purchase after that.
Is Coinbase One worth paying for?
Only if you trade often in the simple app — and even then the spread remains. For most people, Kraken Pro with no subscription is the cheaper option.
